The Center for Security and Emerging Technology (located at the Walsh School of Foreign Service) focuses upon the security impact of emerging technologies. The center supports academic research in the field security and emerging technologies, and provides nonpartisan analysis for policymakers. CSET seeks to educate the next generation of policymakers, analysts, and diplomats. Continue reading to learn more about CSET. Here are some highlights from the center’s research.

Center for Security and Emerging Technology

Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology has been granted a $55million grant by the Open Philanthropy Project. This money will be used to create a new think tank. This group is dedicated to policy research at the intersection of national and international security. Its director, Jason Matheny, was formerly the director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, or AIRPA. Matheny has a vision to help policymakers better understand new technologies' security implications and the potential threats to society.

FAQ

How does AI work?

To understand how AI works, you need to know some basic computing principles.

Computers store data in memory. They process information based on programs written in code. The computer's next step is determined by the code.

An algorithm refers to a set of instructions that tells a computer how it should perform a certain task. These algorithms are often written using code.

An algorithm can be thought of as a recipe. A recipe could contain ingredients and steps. Each step can be considered a separate instruction. For example, one instruction might say "add water to the pot" while another says "heat the pot until boiling."

What can AI be used for today?

Artificial intelligence (AI), also known as machine learning and natural language processing, is a umbrella term that encompasses autonomous agents, neural network, expert systems, machine learning, and other related technologies. It's also known by the term smart machines.

Alan Turing, in 1950, wrote the first computer programming programs. His interest was in computers' ability to think. He presented a test of artificial intelligence in his paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence." The test asks if a computer program can carry on a conversation with a human.

John McCarthy, who introduced artificial intelligence in 1956, coined the term "artificial Intelligence" in his article "Artificial Intelligence".

Today we have many different types of AI-based technologies. Some are very simple and easy to use. Others are more complex. These include voice recognition software and self-driving cars.

There are two main categories of AI: rule-based and statistical. Rule-based uses logic for making decisions. For example, a bank balance would be calculated as follows: If it has $10 or more, withdraw $5. If it has less than $10, deposit $1. Statistics is the use of statistics to make decisions. For example, a weather prediction might use historical data in order to predict what the next step will be.

How do AI and artificial intelligence affect your job?

AI will replace certain jobs. This includes truck drivers, taxi drivers and cashiers.

AI will create new jobs. This includes those who are data scientists and analysts, project managers or product designers, as also marketing specialists.

AI will simplify current jobs. This applies to accountants, lawyers and doctors as well as teachers, nurses, engineers, and teachers.

AI will make jobs easier. This includes customer support representatives, salespeople, call center agents, as well as customers.

Which industries use AI more?

Automotive is one of the first to adopt AI. BMW AG uses AI for diagnosing car problems, Ford Motor Company uses AI for self-driving vehicles, and General Motors uses AI in order to power its autonomous vehicle fleet.

Other AI industries include banking, insurance, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, telecommunications, transportation, and utilities.

Is Alexa an AI?

The answer is yes. But not quite yet.

Amazon created Alexa, a cloud based voice service. It allows users use their voice to interact directly with devices.

The Echo smart speaker, which first featured Alexa technology, was released. Other companies have since used similar technologies to create their own versions.

Some examples include Google Home (Apple's Siri), and Microsoft's Cortana.

How does AI impact work?

It will change how we work. It will allow us to automate repetitive tasks and allow employees to concentrate on higher-value activities.

It will help improve customer service as well as assist businesses in delivering better products.

This will enable us to predict future trends, and allow us to seize opportunities.

It will give organizations a competitive edge over their competition.

Companies that fail AI will suffer.

Why is AI so important?

It is expected that there will be billions of connected devices within the next 30 years. These devices will include everything from cars to fridges. The Internet of Things is made up of billions of connected devices and the internet. IoT devices can communicate with one another and share information. They will be able make their own decisions. For example, a fridge might decide whether to order more milk based on past consumption patterns.

It is estimated that 50 billion IoT devices will exist by 2025. This is an enormous opportunity for businesses. This presents a huge opportunity for businesses, but it also raises security and privacy concerns.

  • In the first half of 2017, the company discovered and banned 300,000 terrorist-linked accounts, 95 percent of which were found by non-human, artificially intelligent machines. (builtin.com)
  • A 2021 Pew Research survey revealed that 37 percent of respondents who are more concerned than excited about AI had concerns including job loss, privacy, and AI's potential to “surpass human skills.” (builtin.com)
